Our goal is to achieve a 65% sustainably specified interior average on every project in 2023.

Why do a Sustainable Interior Audit?

Having gone through the zero carbon accredit able process ourselves we know that every change can make a difference. Our goal at Pocketspace Interiors is to specify 65% of our product with a sustainable rating. The interior plays a large part in deep retrofitting our spaces to become more ethically sustainable and your workspace has an opportunity to deliver on our promise. A deep retrofit or retrofitting interiors in a sustainable practice is key to reducing energy levels in both residential and commercial spaces.

How do we know what’s sustainable and what isn’t?

There is two types of product  - environmentally accredited - and not. How we tell them apart is identifying the supplier and model, in turn leads us to the ISO or Eviromark accreditations associated with this product. From experience we can identify core imported product that has no sustainable footprint or LCA chain connecting it to any such environmental rating.

What is a deep retrofit?

Sustainable deep retrofitting is a process of identifying causes and in turn solutions to help your premises become more sustainable and energy efficient. This could be looking at facade materials, heating and cooling systems’ Energetic Consumption, insulation, lighting sources, flooring, through to soft furnishings. This is a way for exisiting buildings to take part in building a more sustainable community when a new build green star rating is not applicable.

How do interiors play a role?

From construction wastage through to the very chair you sit on - interiors is an accessible option to retrofit as you see fit - and if you don’t own the building you can take loose fittings, furniture and fixtures with you. We can compare Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) on different product, and ensure products are to ISO: 26000:2010 or 14001:2004 standards.

Do you have a good resource for sustainable workspaces?

The Sustainable business network has put this great guide together - covering environmental office product guides through to sustainable workspace strategy. You can find this on the New Zealand Green Building council website using the link.

Pocketspace is committed to bringing environmental design conversations to the highest priority in every consultation. It is important to us that we take the lead in environmental responsibility as designers and specifiers.

Our role to decarbonise interior designers starts with selecting one product over another, and we need your help to support our journey in pursuant of New Zealand made product, locally sourced parts and environmentally accredited products with Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)’s done if possible.
